Credit Suisse risk MD resurfaces at Goldman Sachs after nine months

Since the merger with UBS, many top Credit Suisse people have dispersed themselves across financial services. Some have taken longer to return than others, but ended up in equally impressive places. Dimitris Barzillas is the most recent example who, after nine months out of the market, has professionally rebirthed at Goldman Sachs.

Bartzillas joins the US bank as its EMEA head of operational risk and resilience, based in London. He spent over 13 years at Credit Suisse, joining in 2010 and making MD in 2020. His last role at the firm was global head of non-financial risk methodologies, capital and analytics. Prior to that, he spent five years in risk modelling at Lloyds Banking Group.

As an MFE graduate from Brunel University, Bartzillas took a technical approach to his role at Credit Suisse. He says he "introduced data-driven risk management practices" at the Swiss bank through building a "near real-time" risk monitoring analytics platform.

Risk was, of course, a contentious area for the bank which contributed to its downfall, but problems began long before Bartzillas took a leadership role. The bank was involved in 43 enforcement investigations with regulators since 2012, and hired some impressive names (including multiple ex-Goldman people) in its risk teams, but ultimately faced attrition at MD level. Bartzillas' changes may have simply been too little, too late.
