Citi hired a new chief technology officer from UBS

Citi's CTO David Griffiths had a change of role this summer, becoming the bank's group head of artificial intelligence. The bank has now appointed his successor, and he comes from UBS.

Paul McEwen joined Citi as chief technology officer and head of infrastructure, based in New York. He spent the last 12 and a half years at UBS in a variety of senior roles including global head of technology services, as well as group head of infrastructure and security engineering. In the middle of that stint, he left for Wells Fargo, where he worked for seven months as its head of infrastructure before returning to UBS.

McEwan is a citi alum. He was at the bank from 2000 to 2006 and served as global head of applications. He also spent eight years at JPMorgan where he was CTO of client services.

As head of infrastructure, McEwen will presumably work alongside Griffiths on Arc, Citi's internal agentic platform which launched earlier this year. McEwen wrote in an article earlier this year that UBS has been working on AI agents too and is "seeing promising results... in areas such as triaging security alerts, clearing tickets that pile up, and creating incident closure summaries." UBS and Citi declined to comment.

UBS isn't the only European bank that lost a senior technologist to an American bank this month. Li Yang, global head of structured products technology for Barclays, left to join Wells Fargo, where he will work as head of structured derivatives technology.

Paul’s last name is spelled McEwen. Very disrespectful to not check this.
