Akram, who ran the business services sector team at Citi in London, arrived at Barclays today according to a post on his LinkedIn profile. He didn't respond to a request to comment for this article and neither Barclays nor Citi immediately commented. The FCA Register shows Akram leaving Citi at the end of July.
Akram joined Citi from UBS in 2016 and is thought to have built the services team there. He's understood to have been one of Citi's strongest and well-liked sector bankers in Europe.
Akram's arrival at Barclays coincides with that of Greg Dalle, the co-head of Citi's EMEA industrials group. Dalle also officially left Citi at the end of July according to the FCA Register. Dalle is now the co-head of EMEA industrials at Barclays. Akram will run the business services team at the UK bank. Mike Lamb also returned to Barclays from Citi in February and is chairman of the financial institutions group in EMEA.
Citi has embarked upon a banker hiring spree under Vis Raghavan, who's been running the investment bank since 2024. Raghavan said in May that he had made 60 new hires, that he can hire whomever he likes, and that he planned to continue doing so. Many of the people he likes are his former colleagues from JPMorgan.
Dealogic says Citi ranked outside the top ten in both the UK and EMEA for M&A revenues in the first nine months of 2026. It ranked 8th globally for M&A over the same period, down from 6th last year.
